After much deliberation, we decided to tile the side wall to complete the Victorian look. To prep, I smoothed out the high points on the wall and covered with 5:1 PVA mixture as the dry plaster is pretty porous. Added some finish plaster to the base and will start tiling tomorrow. My plastering skills have vastly improved since my first attempt. Not that it matters as the walls will be covered with tile shortly, but I'll know the beauty underneath.
On the ceiling, I carved out the cracks, coated with 3:1 PVA, joint compound and scrim tape. And voila, no more cracks in the ceiling... Or at last this ceiling..
